Using a mirror, inspect your breasts with your arms at your sides, with your hands on your hips, and then with your arms raised above your head while flexing your chest muscles.

Look carefully for any changes in the size, shape, contour of each breast.  Look for, swelling, dimpling of skin, or appearance of the nipple.  It is normal if your right and left breasts do not match exactly.

Using the pads of your fingers (fingers flat), press firmly on your breast, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Move around your breast in a circular, up-and-down, or wedge pattern. Remember to use the same method every month. Check both breasts.

Gently squeeze both nipples and look for discharge.

There are three patterns you can use to examine your breast: the circular, the up-and-down, and the wedge patterns. Use the pattern that is easiest for you, and use the same pattern every month.

Examine both breasts lying down. To examine the right breast, place a pillow under your right shoulder and place your right hand behind your head. Using the pads of your fingers on your left hand, press firmly, checking the entire breast and armpit area. Use the same pattern you used while standing. Repeat for your left breast.

Breast Self-Exam and Mammogram Reminder

Let us remind you about your breast self-exam.
Monthly breast self-examinations are an important part of your breast health. Together with annual clinical breast exams performed by a health care professional and yearly mammograms after the age of 40, monthly breast self-exams can greatly increase the chance that you'll find any breast changes early.

Let Eastchester Center for Cancer Care help you remember your monthly breast self-exam. If you'll fill out the form below, we'll e-mail you on the date you request to remind you to perform your self-exam. To help you pick a reminder date, keep in mind that menstruating women should perform a breast self-exam on the 5th or 7th day after the menstrual period begins. Other women should choose the same day each month to perform a breast self-exam.

Whatever day you choose, being vigilant about your monthly breast self-exam is essential to your long-term breast health.
